Where to stay
Heraklion suits a first or last night, close to Knossos and the ferry, but it is a working city rather than a resort town. Chania, on the west coast, has the better-known Old Town of Venetian harbour and narrow lanes, and puts Balos and the White Mountains within reach. Rethymno, between the two, splits the difference with its own Venetian quarter and a long sandy beach. Basing in more than one is normal given the driving distances.
When to go
Crete has the widest good-weather window of any island in this guide — April, May, June, September and October all count, with low wind risk throughout. Its size and southern latitude stretch the shoulder seasons further than in the Cyclades, since the Libyan Sea coast warms up early. Late April and May suit hiking the Samaria Gorge before the summer heat sets in; September and October keep the sea warm with fewer visitors than peak summer.

Crete needs a rental car — public transport connects the main towns but not the gorges, beaches and villages that make the island worth the trip. Heraklion to Chania is about 140 kilometres, roughly two hours by road, which rules out day-tripping between them casually. Treat Crete as several regions rather than one island: pick two bases rather than trying to see the whole coastline on one trip.
