Getting there
Hydra Town is the port itself, so there is no transfer once you land — hydrofoils and catamarans from Piraeus dock right at the harbour. The crossing takes about 1 hour 30 minutes on Hellenic Seaways' fast boats, with several sailings a day, year-round. There is no conventional (slow) ferry on this route and no airport on the island, so the boat is the only way in.
Where to stay
Hydra Town has the views and the nightlife — sea-captains' mansions turned into boutique hotels line the hill above the harbour, a short walk from every restaurant and ferry. Kamini, one cove west, is quieter and more residential, with a small fishing harbour and a walking path back into town. Either base works without a car, since neither exists here.
When to go
Hydra runs on a longer calendar than the Cyclades: April, May, June, September and October all count as good months, with low wind risk across the season. April and October are quiet, with the harbour cafes half full and prices down from summer peaks. July and August bring day-trip crowds off Athens cruise excursions, so early evening, after the last boats leave, is when the town feels like itself again.
Good to know
No cars, motorbikes or scooters are allowed anywhere on Hydra — everything moves by donkey, water taxi or on foot, which matters most if you are dragging a wheeled suitcase over cobblestones from the port to your hotel. Porters with donkeys wait at the harbour and will carry bags for a fee. Day-trip boats from Athens crowd the waterfront around midday; book restaurants for after 8pm to skip the rush.
