Getting there
Ferries dock at Adamas, the main harbour, 5 km from the hilltop capital at Plaka. Adamas is also the practical base: the rental desks, ticket agencies and boat trips all start there. Piraeus is 3 hours by fast ferry with SeaJets or Aegean Speed Lines, or 6h 30m on the conventional Zante Ferries boat. Milos has an airport a few kilometres from Adamas, but Athens flights only. Santorini is 1h 50m away and fast ferry only.
Where to stay
Adamas is the arrival-day choice: no transfer, most of the restaurants, all of the boat trips. Plaka and Trypiti, 5 km uphill, have the views and the best evening walk, but need a car. Pollonia, on the northeast tip, is a small fishing village with the calmest swimming and quieter dinners. Firopotamos, Klima and the other syrmata villages are photogenic and tiny, and impractical as a base without wheels.
When to go
May, June, September and October, a long window because Milos is about water rather than nightlife and the sea holds its heat well into autumn. Wind risk is moderate and it matters more here than elsewhere, since the Kleftiko boat trips that many people come for are cancelled outright on meltemi days in July and August. Shoulder season means calmer sailings, somewhere to park at Sarakiniko, and rooms at roughly half the August rate.
Good to know
You need a car here, and standard rental contracts usually forbid the dirt roads that reach the best southern beaches, so read the terms or hire an ATV. Book the vehicle before you book the ferry in August. Buses run only a handful of times a day. Kleftiko is reachable by boat alone, so schedule that trip early in your stay and keep a spare day in case the wind cancels it. ATMs are concentrated in Adamas.
