Getting there
Ferries dock at Athinios, a single concrete quay on the southwest coast 10 km below Fira. Nothing arrives in Fira itself, whatever the photographs suggest. One switchback road climbs from the port, and buses and hotel transfers leave within minutes of the ramp opening, so arrange your ride before you sail. Piraeus is 4h 30m on the SeaJets fast ferry, 8 hours on the Blue Star. The airport sits inland near Monolithos, about 6 km from Fira, with direct European flights all summer.
Where to stay
Fira is the bus hub, the cheapest caldera address and the closest base to Athinios. Firostefani and Imerovigli give you the same view with far less noise, and both stay walkable to Fira. Oia is the postcard and charges for it, plus a 20-minute bus back to anywhere else. Kamari and Perissa on the east coast trade the caldera for black sand, beach tavernas and lower prices. Pyrgos, inland and uphill, is the quiet option.
When to go
May, June, September and October are the months to aim for. Wind risk is moderate rather than severe: Santorini lies far enough south that the July and August meltemi usually means a rough fast-ferry crossing rather than a cancelled one, though the small catamarans do get pulled. Shoulder season buys you three real things: a caldera path you can walk at midday, sunset in Oia without a long standing wait, and rooms at roughly half their August rate.
Good to know
Buses radiate from the central station in Fira and are cheap, but they thin out after dark. Taxis are famously scarce, so book transfers rather than hoping. You do not need a car if you sleep on the caldera; you will want one from Kamari or Perissa. Cruise ships land tenders at the Old Port and fill Fira between roughly 10am and 6pm, which is the worst window for the cable car and the caldera path. Cards are accepted almost everywhere.
